Dear Boxing Association Presidents,

Ok all you boxing association presidents, listen up.

I just spent the better portion of my day trying to figure out exactly how all of your boxing associations work and link to each other.

What the hell are you thinking?

Who's the Champ?

In the middleweight division of just the top four most recognized associations (and most recognized is a relative term), there are 4-5 different champions:

  • IBF – Daniel Geale
  • WBA – Felix Sturm (and Super Champion Gennady Golovkin)
  • WBC - Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr
  • WBO – Dmitry Pirog

That's only four of the 41 or so professional boxing associations, and it's not just limited to middleweights - all of the otehr weight classes are just as bad.

It’s like saying the Superbowl was won by Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Green Bay, New York and – yeah – maybe Seattle as well if you take x and y into account.

No wonder fans are flocking to the UFC. Because it's simple, one main driving force (the UFC) and one champion in each weight division. Fans actually have a chance at following what is going on.

Fix the Problem...

Honestly, I don’t care which organization or association does it, but one of you seriously needs to absorb the rest. The UFC did it by purchasing PRIDE, Strikeforce, and WEC. The NFL did it when it consumed the AFL. The NBA ate the ABA. In all cases, it resulted in simplicity – something boxing is missing.

If you don't do it, maybe I will start my own boxing association. Apparently it doesn’t take much to do it considering how many currently exist. If nothing else, I could call myself the president of something and contribute to the alphabet soup mess that makes up no less than 41 different professional associations. Even better, why don’t we all do it – it couldn’t be any less confusing.

A Better Future

Can you imagine what it would be like if you were talking about the title fight with your buddies and everyone was talking about the same fight? Or how much more loyal fans would be if they could throw themselves behind the champ if they actually knew who the champ was?

Gentlemen/women of the various boxing associations - do boxing a favour and make it easy for us to understand. Set aside your greed and lust for power and do what is right for the sport and simplify before it's too late.

This exact issue has driven

This exact issue has driven me crazy for years. It can be really frustrating. I don't understand why more people don't talk about it though.
