How to Find Boxing Fights on the Internet

Want to be a better boxer? Then watch boxing.

I really hope that what I just said is nothing new to you. I'm really hoping you have already figured it out. If you haven't, I won't say you're slow cause that would just be mean, but...

You learn in a number of different ways. You learn by audio, visual, and of course by doing. So does it not make sense to maximize your learning ability from all angles?

Of course it does. And there is nothing more motivating than watching a good boxing match (or movie) to get you in the mood to go train. Watching a professional can give you some important clues to work on and some things to avoid. If, of course you learn how to watch a boxing fight.

Today, I'm going to show you how to find boxing fights to download on the internet. It is up to you to decide which of these four methods you are interested in using, and some are a lot better than others, but all together you should never miss out on a boxing fight again. I recommend, (in order of usefulness):

1. Easynews

#1 Choice:
EasynewsEasy what? It is a newsgroup server and if that means nothing to you, don't worry about it. What you need to know is that the Easynews service is the best place to download boxing fights (and anything else you might ever want so careful what you search for). It is not speed limited. You will be able to download as fast as your connection can handle EVERYTIME. I can download a full length DIVX boxing match in about 20 minutes on my DSL connection which maxes out at about 540KB/sec. There is no share ratio meaning you can download as much as you want and never have to upload. There has never been a boxing match I've wanted to watch that I haven't found. Another plus is that the file formats range from DVD to DIVX to whatever meaning you can play these things on your TV and all you need is a web browser to use it. If you are reading this, you are good to go. However, it is not an archival service and it is not free. You have to pay a monthly fee and the fights only last there for about 30 days unless the are reposted by people (which happens often). Personally, the speed of downloads and sheer variety of downloads is well worth the price. Learn how to download boxing fights at easynewsguide.com.

2. World Boxing Video Archive

#2 Choice:
World Boxing
Video ArchiveThis boxing download site is a bittorrent tracker specializing in boxing fights. It has an awesome variety and a good community that responds to requests. If you are looking for an older fight or a classic, you will likely find it here. Issues I have with it are that it is a bittorent site, so all the inherent piss offs inherent with bittorrent are present. Things like share ratios (you have to upload a certain amount in order to download), limited speeds (speed depends on how many seeders and leechers there are and how fast they are permitting people to download from them), and incomplete files (sometimes people turn off their computers before you are down the transfer). It is free though and the selection is usually good. Quality depends on the file - some are great, some aren't.

3. Youtube

#3 Choice:
YoutubeYou can find plenty of fights on youtube and I'm sure you are familiar with their quality. Most abundant are the ad hoc backyard boxing variety or short rounds of major matches. It is rare to find a complete match and copyright rules will likely make that even harder as Google figures out how to eliminate them all from Youtube. Quality is not so good as the files are optimized for speed, but the plus side is you don't have to wait for a download - it is streamed direct to your computer so you can begin watching it instantly.

4. StreamTV Now

#4 Choice:
StreamTVIf you want to watch a live pay per view show or broadcast, then this is the place to go. Don't expect a lot of support in setting this up, as it appears their email and contact info has been removed, but you can watch live pay per view shows in progress after becoming a member. Don't ask me if this is legal - doesn't seem like it can be when the membership costs about $3 a month and you have access to pay per view fights being streamed that cost $49.95 a fight. You can make up your own mind there, but I can tell you I've seen it working. The quality is good and with over 51000 members, at least some people think it's legal or don't really care.

So there you have it. Now you have no excuse not to be able to participate in the forums and discuss how boxers did in their latest fight here on How to Box. You can see everyone of the boxing matches in the comfort of your own home.

Anyone have any other great resources they want to share with us?

The Secret to Watching a Fight: A Five Part Series

Anyone can watch a boxing fight, but few can live it.

By employing a few simple strategies you can actually live the fight turning it into an experience.

There are few things in life that can hold the attention of someone like two men or women in a ring trying to knock each other's head off. Boxing tends to produce extreme responses -- either extreme fascination or extreme disgust. (I vote for fascination...)

Boxing fans are not just spectators of the sport. To be a true boxing fan, you need to learn how to live the fight almost to the point of the fighters involved. Once you reach that level of committment to the match, you will have a much more fulfilling experience when the fight actually happens. I guarantee that by employing any of the things I'm going to teach you over the course of the next five articles you will not only enjoy every fight you watch a hundred times more, but you will also learn more than you thought possible from the pros.

Part One is going to give you the fundamentals of watching a fight including all of the things you need to look for. I will give you a checklist to watch for in the fight and I'll show you how to become an active participant in the match rather than just a spectator. You'll take ownership of a boxer and thoroughly investigate them. Understanding what I teach in Part One will give you the ability to completely analyze a fight and with practice, there is no reason you can't pick the winner 75% of the time.

Parts Two and Three will show you how to investigate a boxer and we'll use a real life upcoming fight to drive the point home. I'll show you how to ask the questions that need asking and notice the things about their lives and training that matter when they get in the ring. Things like mouthing off in the media and missing weight are indicators. Some of these things come down to basic human psychology, but in the end, they will help you pick and analyse a fight.

Part Four will take you through my analysis of an upcoming fight. I'll give you the framework to follow in making your own analyses. I will then encourage you to engage in some pre-fight banter and submit your own analysis of the fight for discussion.

Part Five will be a post fight follow up. I'll analyze it and pick out the things you should have noticed when watching the fight. I'm sure this will turn into a good discussion, but the real goal will be to see what the boxers did right and wrong so you can apply these things to your own training.

I had Part One 95% written here about 20 minutes ago when I hit the wrong button on the computer and lost it all. After swearing for a while and smacking around the heavy bag, I calmed down and realized that despite wasting an hour and half, the second draft should go quicker - so I'm back in my Zen zone. However, that means you have to wait until tomorrow for Part One.

Until tomorrow....keep training. If there is anything specific you want me to cover in the next 5 articles, go ahead and leave a comment.

Boxing Training Video Critique

I encourage everyone to upload videos to their blog for the rest of the members of How to Box to critique. It is very easy to develop bad habits without a trainer watching your every move. Unfortunately for most of us, boxing trainers and boxing gyms are not available or we simply do not have the means to attend them. As such, many of you have resorted to How to Box for your boxing fix.

Well, now I've made it possible for you to easily upload videos of your training and your fights to your blog so myself and others with some knowledge of boxing can take a look at what you are doing and offer some feedback and advice. Do not be ashamed of your videos or feel that you are such a beginner that everyone will simply laugh at you. The best way to learn is to make mistakes and if you have a thick enough skin, the collective wisdom here on the site might be able to show you where you are going wrong and help you improve.

As an added bonus, you may even make some money when you upload your videos if you use Revver. Each video is tagged and an ad is shown at the end of it. If someone watching it clicks on the ad, you earn a portion (50%) of what the advertiser paid to put it there. The other 50% goes to the people actually hosting the video - Revver.com.

New: Now support Youtube as well...

So, what are you waiting for. It's a win-win-win situation and here are the simple instructions for doing it.

How to Upload Your Videos

1. Go to Revver.com sign up and download the upload utility for your computer. (Don't worry it's free, spyware/virus free). They have a tutorial on the site to help you upload your videos if this is too brief for you. (You can also use Youtube if you want, but you won't get paid for your videos...)

2. Double click on the upload utility and upload your videos to Revver. The process is pretty straight forward. There is a bit of a delay from when you upload until they are available for you to post to your blog. (20 minutes to 48 hours, it depends). The size limit for files is 100MB, and they take pretty much any format. There is currently no limit on the number of videos you can upload.

3. When they show up in your account, come back to How to Box and click "Create Content" in the navigation menu.

4. Click "Video" from the list of options that come up.

5. Fill in a teaser, title and description.

6. Here's the important part: Under the title Video Number, you need to find the number of the video from Revver.com or Youtube that you want to show up here and then simply type it in. The easiest way to get the number is to go to your video at Revver or Youtube and then look just underneath the video where it says "VIDEO URL". The first number reading from left to right is the number you need.

For example: If the Revver VIDEO URL is "http://revver.com/video/33330", then the video number is 33330.

Another example: VIDEO URL is "http://revver.com/video/34567/12345", then the video number is 34567.

At Youtube: video number is the number after v= in the permalink url.
7. That's it, your video will show up on How to Box ready for everyone to critique. You can see if anyone has at any time by going to your account and clicking the Track tab at the top next to edit. That tab keeps track of everything you do on the site and lets you know when things are updated.
I look forward to seeing your fights and your training progress. Upload away. As always, if you're having problems, just leave a comment and ask your question.

White Men Can't Fight

Bob Arum, boxing promoter, said that during a meeting with HBO executives about a year ago, he brought up Kelly Pavlik in an effort to try to get him a fight on the network.

"They all laughed at me because there is a perception with boxing network guys, with boxing people, that if you are a white guy, you can't fight," Arum said Wednesday during a conference call.

The reply from Ross Greenburg, HBO:

"It is a disgraceful and undignified remark by a disturbed man," Greenburg said of Arum's comments regarding white fighters. "That is pretty much all we have to say. It is sad. This has nothing to do with race." - Read full article.

Can you say promotion?

Comments like that in this day and age are said for a reason -- publicity. Nobody knows that better than Arum, known for stirring up controversy to further his causes. I'm writing about it, other people are writing about it -- I guess it worked. However, did it work to get Kelly Pavlik on HBO anytime in the near future? Your guess is as good as mine. Greenburg said he has no problem putting Pavlik on as an opponent in a big fight -- just nothing has come up yet. Do you think something is in the brewing? It is nonsense to think that HBO would not put Pavlik 27-0 on because he is white. People watch Pavlik, he would be good for business.

I'm a firm believer in the equalizing qualities of boxing. No matter what your background, what color your skin, how much money you make, or where you grew up, once you step into the ring, you are on your own. It is one of the last places on the planet where the better and stronger man wins (taking away any illegal, scandalous activities of course).

Quite frankly it doesn't matter who is in the ring. Either he or she can fight or they can't. Are they good to watch? Would I watch them again? A fight is a fight and if some one armed midget who was half black, half asian, half caucasian (I'm making a point...) kicks the snot out of his opponent, I don't care what he looks like. I just want to see him fight again. A good performance, a good fighter is what drives ratings and attendance. Two of them in the ring together are even better.

So, when HBO or Arum find the right mix and right mix contains Pavlik, then Kelly Pavlik, white man, will be on HBO.

Kudos to Arum, though, at least he knows how to promote. Any publicity is good publicity, right? Thoughts/opinions?
