Biggest Fight Ever? Hatton vs Mayweather

Where will you be on December 8, 2007?

In case you haven't heard (and I'd be very surprised if you're a boxing fan at all), Floyd Mayweather Jr and Ricky Hatton are going to meet in what is perhaps the biggest fight since Joe Louis met Muhammed Ali. HBO is doing it's very best to hype the fight at that level. And it's a great thing because it is focusing a lot of attention on boxing.

Hatton vs MayweatherHere you have two fighters that are undefeated and both are incredibly talented. Mayweather is a master of precision and defense while Hatton is a brawler, slugger, and power puncher. It is going to be a good fight and a huge payday for both of them. Pay per view sales are expected to surpass 1 million which will of course put Mayweather in the two biggest pay per view fights this past year. (De La Hoya being the other one).

Anyways, it would be a good idea to follow the journey of these two elite fighters as they train for this showdown and HBO is making it easy. You can meet both fighters, get to know their backgrounds, and see their workoup training (from which you can glean a thing or two for yourselves). Episode 1 of Mayweather/Hatton 24/7 is currently on the HBO site and is very well done. For starters you get to see Mayweather in some real surroundings - with his kids there - a side you never really see. Don't worry, there is plenty of the real Floyd there as well, trash talking Hatton and every other fighter in the world.

The contrast between Mayweather and Hatton is absolutely phenomenal. It may be a clever marketing ploy and creative editing, but HBO is definitely portraying Mayweather as the bad guy while Hatton comes across as the people's choice - sort of a good vs evil scenario. At the same time, they give us a glimpse of Floyd's history to try and explain why he is like he is. For a second, you almost feel sorry for him, and then he starts to wave around all his "bling" - oh yeah, and he opens his mouth.

I've yet to make up my mind regarding the outcome of this fight, but I look forward to the workup. Not to mention that the background of both of these fighters makes things even more interesting -- the whole American vs Britain thing. The winner of this fight is undoubtedly going to take fighter of the year, and I'm not the only one that thinks that. I've posted a poll (see right). Who do you think is going to remain undefeated at the end of the night on 8 Dec?
