Why strength train?


As a boxer, is it really necessary to be huge and muscular? No, but it is going to happen if you are any good. Strength training will accomplish the following:

1. Increased Lean Muscle Mass
2. Increase and even restore bone density
3. Increased metabolic rate
4. Increased functional abilities
5. Prevents disease and injury
6. Reduces stress and anxiety
7. Increased morale, physical appearance, and contentment

As a boxer, it is not necessary to be built like a bodybuilder, however, it is in your best interests to be operating at the maximum weight your weight class allows. And it should not just be any weight, you want to gain the most functional muscle you can. Fat doesn't transfer energy, muscle does, so the more and stronger your muscles are, the more effective you will be in the ring. It just so happens that a bodybuilder's physique is a direct result of boxing training (with a few differences).

The workouts and programs listed below are strength training programs. Depending on the type, intensity, and quantity of the resistance applied, strength training workouts will achieve different objectives by targeting different parts of your muscles. Some will help you get bigger, some stronger and more powerful, some will simply tone existing muscles, and some will increase your endurance, speed, and agility. Used with a proper program of nutrition you will experience significant muscle gains or tone an existing body.
Equipment required:

Some type of adjustable resistance. Most commonly a set of free weights with bench is recommended, although the same can be achieved with a gym membership, band resistance, common exercise machines such as the Bowflex, or bodyweight and a little ingenuity (eg.. sandbags, sleds, heavy objects).

I am big on the free weights or at least some system that does not stabilize the weight as it enhances the body's ability to develop stabilizer muscles which support the movement of your bigger muscle groups.

The workouts are divided into the following:

1. Gain Muscle Mass
2. General Fitness
3. Develop Strength and Power
4. Develop Speed and Agility
5. Rehabilitation

how many weeks should these workouts be continued? or should i be training every week?

The best way to gain

The best way to gain strength but not look like a bodybuilder is to train your core muscles. Thats the way bruce lee did it and you just have to look at him to know that he had a powerful body! Especially work on training your abs because they play a big part when your training in any martial art! You should aim to have 3 Cardiovascular workouts a week - Tuesday, Thursday + Saturday(each lasting around an hour) and 3 strength training workouts a week - Monday, Wednesday + Friday (each lasting around 45 minutes, no more - reason being that your body responds better to short strength training workouts). You should rest your body on a sunday!

Workouts

Hey im about 5'7" im 150lbs and I lift everyday.
I box around w/ my friends and i kick some serious a**.
I am taking legit boxing lessons this summer, and wanted to know individual workout that would increase my power as a boxer, the ones that will help- most..

ie: Bench a lot and curl a lot, avoid squats. That type of stuff... I know like every workouts name so u can be straight forward w/ me....thanks.
