Heavy Bag Workouts

If I was to ask you to paint me a picture of boxing training it would undoubtedly involve a heavy bag and maybe even a boxer.

The heavy bag is the essence of boxing. It is why boxers show up everyday in their gyms, basements, or bedrooms. Next to hitting a real human being, this is as good as it gets. Ask anyone who has ever had a real heavy bag workout and they will tell you it is the most exhilirating experience they've ever had -- and that's only because they haven't sparred yet.

Think for a moment why Billy Blanks and the TaeBo craze was and continues to be so successful. It taps into that primal, instinctive part of all of us. That taboo part that wants to hurt things. Don't you think it's time to get in touch with your psychopathic side?

I'm just kidding, boxers are no more psychotic than you are. But they have experienced a heavy bag and you should to, if you haven't already.

Walk into a boxing gym around heavy bag hitting time and you will hear the distinct pops of jabs, cracks of rights, and bass sounding woomphs of hooks. The heavy bag takes it all and gives nothing but benefits back to the hitter. A boxer builds a unique bond with his/her heavy bag. The heavy bag is a boxer's outlet for fury, rage, and focused violence. It doesn't complain, it doesn't call the cops, and it will absorb whatever punishment you dish out.

I may be making you think boxers are misfits and while boxers do have their share of run ins with the law, I don't want to mislead you into believing you have to be some hard ass to reap benefits from hitting a heavy bag. Truth be told, a heavy bag is the best anaerobic workout you can do. It is pure testosterone and requires a focused effort that will push you through limits you didn't know you had.

Specific benefits of heavy bag training include:

  • stress relief
  • maximum limit training - push through lactose limits to maximize anaerobic training
  • strength training benefits - engaging the heavy bag requires effort from all of the major muscle groups of the body - glutes, legs, abs, arms, back, calves...
  • increased stamina
  • increased mental focus
  • a feel good feeling unparalleled in the exercise world

There is a reason boxers hit the heavy bag. For conditioning or skill development, there is nothing that matches up that a boxer can do alone. Don't you think it's time you built a relationship with your heavy bag today?

If you want to get started you're in the right place, but you must:

  1. Protect yourself - Learn how to wrap your hands and ensure you have the right boxing protective equipment
  2. Buy a heavy bag - here's a heavy bag buying guide to ensure you get what you need.
  3. Have a plan - Luckily this is the page for heavy bag workouts. If you can't see more than two listed below here, then upgrade and get access to everything including the 12 week program. The two listed here are just a fraction of what you will find after upgrading.
