getting faster

To supplement your shadow-boxing, you should purchase weighted gloves. The added weight will not only increase the power of your punches, but potentially your speed, as well. Working a rhythm bag (speed bag) can increase hand speed, also.

One other note, and please don't let this discourage you, because it is only my personal opinion: Speed, like so many other aspects of boxing, is about 80% genetic. Some people are just born faster, or stronger, than others. This is not to say that you cannot make yourself faster by training, you can, but it will take time. Repetition, and lots of it. Just keep it up, shadow-boxing, speed-bag, etc...and sooner or later your speed should improve.

Relax

Another point to bring up is to relax. A lot of people tense right up thinking that they will be faster if they use every bit of muscle power they have. Tensing up causes inertia which must be overcome. Remaining relaxed and fluid until the moment of impact will let you snap punches instead of throwing them -- not to mention the energy you are going to save not walking around like Schwarzenegger in a pose down. Think of your arms as whips - you throw limp arms out and as the whip straightens, everything tenses at the moment of impact -- SNAP, then nice and fluid back to the start.

Genetics do have something to do with it, but few people every really develop their bodies to their full genetic potential, so don't think you are destined for slowness. Keep at it, use your mind and control what you are doing and how your body is reacting and the speed will come.
