Rapid gains in speed,

Rapid gains in speed, stamina, strength etc are not the norm so don't get frustrated. Be smart and consistent in your training and make sure you rest....not resting can make you feel like you are going backwards. One minute you are feeling like the next champ and then all of a sudden you slow down and essentially burn-out for the moment. Sometimes when we reach a new level or realize a new skill we get excited and focus on it too much.

Let me ask you....what do you do specifically for speed training?

I train my speed based on one minute rounds at 100% exertion. I practice punch combinations and counterpunching drills over and over while doing so. I utilize shadow boxing, speed bag, double end bag, focus pad and heavy bag drills. Plus study and practice plyometric exercises for boxers. I rarely show up to train and just randomly hit the bag. I breakdown the essentials and train them using a round timer...even when I skip.

I see my speed improve in direct relation with improvements in my technique both upper and lower body working in harmony. You can be fast and effective for one or two punches but if your footwork sucks you lose control and if going against a patient experienced boxer your fast flurry of punches can leave you set up with no means of defense. In addition, cardiovascular ability and overall fitness levels (which includes proper nutrition)are in direct relation.

When I feel that I am frustrated about a lack of improvement or even maintaining a certain level of ability, I stop take a couple of days off and regroup. I stick to a foundation and it seems to work.

Peace.

You don't need to have weights

You don't have to have weights to increase hand speed. Like I said previously. Train on the bags, pads and shadow box. Learn technique and punch combinations. Practice, practice. Some days hit hard and work on technique. Other days throw as fast as you can till you can't throw no more. Little by little your technique improves and your speed increases. Just remember your body works as a unit so if you've got no footwork....your speed and power will suffer.
