Biggest Fight Ever? Hatton vs Mayweather

Where will you be on December 8, 2007?

In case you haven't heard (and I'd be very surprised if you're a boxing fan at all), Floyd Mayweather Jr and Ricky Hatton are going to meet in what is perhaps the biggest fight since Joe Louis met Muhammed Ali.  HBO is doing it's very best to hype the fight at that level.  And it's a great thing because it is focusing a lot of attention on boxing.

Hatton vs Mayweather
Here you have two fighters that are undefeated and both are incredibly talented.  Mayweather is a master of precision and defense while Hatton is a brawler, slugger, and power puncher.  It is going to be a good fight and a huge payday for both of them.  Pay per view sales are expected to surpass 1 million which will of course put Mayweather in the two biggest pay per view fights this past year. (De La Hoya being the other one).

Anyways, it would be a good idea to follow the journey of these two elite fighters as they train for this showdown and HBO is making it easy.  You can meet both fighters, get to know their backgrounds, and see their workoup training (from which you can glean a thing or two for yourselves).  Episode 1 of Mayweather/Hatton 24/7 is currently on the HBO site and is very well done.  For starters you get to see Mayweather in some real surroundings - with his kids there - a side you never really see.  Don't worry, there is plenty of the real Floyd there as well, trash talking Hatton and every other fighter in the world.

The contrast between Mayweather and Hatton is absolutely phenomenal.  It may be a clever marketing ploy and creative editing, but HBO is definitely portraying Mayweather as the bad guy while Hatton comes across as the people's choice - sort of a good vs evil scenario.  At the same time, they give us a glimpse of Floyd's history to try and explain why he is like he is.  For a second, you almost feel sorry for him, and then he starts to wave around all his "bling" - oh yeah, and he opens his mouth.

I've yet to make up my mind regarding the outcome of this fight, but I look forward to the workup.  Not to mention that the background of both of these fighters makes things even more interesting -- the whole American vs Britain thing.  The winner of this fight is undoubtedly going to take fighter of the year, and I'm not the only one that thinks that.  I've posted a poll (see right).  Who do you think is going to remain undefeated at the end of the night on 8 Dec?

Mayweather

Hate him or love him he is one of the greatest and he has beaten alotta the best welterweight boxers where as hatton has beat a lotta nobodys and older fighters by wrestling them most the time. this is my Guess on whats going to happen hatton is going to come in throwing those slow bone crushing body shots to try and slow down mayweather if he lands a clean one he will prolly win the fight, but chances are mayweather will dodge and dance around and hatton will walk right into every jab he throws. either mayweather will win by points or hatton will go down in later round because he will wear himself out trying to catch floyd. and i know everyone looks at mayweather as the bad guy, but there is no room for good guys in boxing, muhammad ali was one of the greatest trash talkers of all time and look at him and mike tyson...well enough said lol.

I agree with most of what

I agree with most of what you said, however if we look at the Oscar, Mayweather fight, I would say that Oscar was the better and more talented fighter. To me, I believe the judges were favoring Mayweather. I think that if Hatton holds Mayweather in a corner, that would be to his advantage. In a sense Floyd is almost a coward. He jabs and then steps back. He doesn't really want to fight, he just looks for the right moment to land hard punches

I really hope Hatton nails him...

I've got a good feeling Hatton's gonna take him out. He's got the power and he also knows how to slow boxers down and there is alot more to his boxing than people make out.Yeah he likes to wrestle and hold, but surely thats gone be a good thing against a fighter like Mayweather always running away. He has recently come out saying he is better than Ali.I think before he can call himself a legend he's gotta do more than back step all the time countering. He has fought the best which is true, but how many of them has he really gone toe to toe with.

Go watch some UFC

If you don't like his fighting style and wana see two guys stand toe to toe and exchange punches to the face go watch some UFC

I ordered the last fight

I ordered the last fight which I thought was boring beyond reason. Not to put down lighter weight classes but im not spending another 40 bucks to watch a decision fight.

Styles Make Fights

Mayweather's style does not lend well to exciting fights - no matter who he is fighting. With Hatton, at least there is the chance that he will bully Mayweather into standing toe to toe.

B.I.G.: I have to disagree with your take on there being no room for good guys in boxing. We all know that a lot of Mayweather's trash talk and strutting is marketing to increase the hype leading up to a fight. More hype means a bigger payday. Still, I believe his behaviour takes something away from the sport and only fuels critics trying to show what neanderthals boxing creates. That said, one does have to admire Mayweather's defensive capability. He is a master of hitting and not getting hit which is what boxing is all about. That said, I personally would like to see Hatton shut him up, just as I wanted to see De La Hoya shut him up, or better yet, one of his underrated opponents - just to make it sting a little more.

bubby69: I too would like to see Mayweather stand toe to toe with someone. With any luck, Hatton will force him, but unless he cuts off all axis of escape, the more likely show is going to be Mayweather picking away at an advancing Hatton as he backpedals around the ring.

IZVN: I hear your sentiments loud and clear. The only thing worse than paying obscene amounts of money for a long boring fight is paying for a fight that lasts under 30 seconds (think Tyson). As a consolation, at least it is only $40 and not $4000 for ringside seats. At least a long, boring fight gives you something for the money. But yeah, I don't think you're ever going to see one of those "exciting" fights come out of Mayweather. You could always invite 10 friends over and split the cost - $4 for a boring fight doesn't hurt as much.

Mayweather vs Hatton who will win and why

I'm a little floored by the comment about that said the following, "I would say that Oscar was the better and more talented fighter." Really?? I've watched this fight plenty of times and please tell me where Oscar demonstrated he was more talented. Certainly not when he was throwing those wild, amateurish body shots that weren't landing or being blocked. Certainly NOT when he was getting timed to where he was being countered so much that he stopped throwing his jab because he was tired of being hit by the counter over hand right of Floyd's (see Round 5 and nine as a demonstration of this). Most of all as usual with Oscar, fatigue set in and he turned into a plodder that couldn't contend with Floyd. I could go on for days about that fight but lets discuss HATTON now.

Does Hatton have a chance?? Yep, anyone has a chance but heres the thing, unless Floyd's hand become an issue, Hatton is going to be in for a helluva fight where he'll probably end up in a bloody pulp. See heres the deal. What Floyd does better than I'd say even Bernard Hopkins and definitely most fighters is, he TAKES AWAY what YOU like to do to be effective. Basically he'll take away your PLAN A and make you beat him with your Plan C and D if you have one and most fighters don't. Does it make for exciting boxing viewing for the laymen?? NOt really because they're not looking for what a boxer sees. But it's very effective.

Lets look at Ricky's fight with Luis Collazo. Granted Luis was/is a southpaw but Luis won that fight. All he did was pivot and countered Hatton with angles. NewsFlash, while Collazo is a good boxer, I think we all agree Floyd is a better boxer than Lou and this is one plan he could implement.

Hatton is focused, thinking he can get in on the inside of Floyd and land body shots. Unfortunately for Hatton, boxing is won with the FEET and Floyd has some of the best footwork there is. Point being, what is his plan when he isn't able to get inside.

I think we ALL know that Floyd is a better boxer than Ricky so Ricky will NOT win at a boxing match. Ricky is going to have to do his HIT AND HOLD John Ruiz impersonation, hope that Floyd breaks his hand during the fight and TRY to mix it with some boxing . Then maybe he has small chance. Unfortunately watching his training (and these are only clips), I see that he thinks he can do his normal routine and THINKS he'll be able to get inside to Floyd and that won't work..

Easy pick is Floyd by decision but I'm going to go with Floyd by stoppage. The blueprint is out on Ricky, wheres the one for Floyd??

Mayweather vs. Hatton

I actually really like BOTH fighters. I am not a fan of Floyd's flamboyance nor his lack of control of his mouth. Trash talking is one thing, but when you cannot replace "muthafu#$k" this and "muthaf#@ck" that with something else it says something about you...but that has nothing to do with his boxing skills which I am a huge fan of and share the utmost respect. Hatton is a strong contrast to this and this MAY play into his favor IF Floyd comes in underestimating "the lad". I like his aggressiveness, balance, power and boxing ability. I wonder how this will hold up when he finally faces someone of Mayweather's stature. I think Floyd will win, but only if: 1. Hatton follows him around and punches himself out 2. Hatton does not come in in TOP condition ready to go the distance 3. Floyd should not go toe-to-toe and simply work to out box Hatton and display his superior speed and skills I really am looking forward to a great boxing matchup with no BS to take away from the fight. Boxing fans today deserve to see a great Hagler/Hearns/Leonard/Duran era epic battle. Don't you agree? "Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care."

Are you from the UK - and want to see this fight?

If you are over 18 and a resident of the UK, you can win tickets to see Mayweather/Hatton in person at the MGM in Las Vegas. Prize includes airfare.

That blog also has a good discussion going on the fight - I'd recommend taking a look.

One Thing That's Not Yet Been Said

For the most part, all of these comments are insightful; for the record, I'm putting my money on Floyd, for the simple reason that I think Ricky Hatton was somewhat exposed by Luis Collazo. By contrast, I've never seen Floyd Mayweather exposed in a fight (by the way, I have to agree with one of the folks above; how can anyone watch the Oscar/Floyd fight and think Oscar was more talented?). One thing that I haven't seen mentioned yet: when we watch Floyd's fight versus De la Hoya, you're watching Floyd fight a guy that's much bigger than him. When he fights Hatton, Floyd will be dropping back down to a lower weight class to face a guy that's moving UP to 147, where he's only been once: against Luis Collazo. It's scary enough to watch Floyd counter and outspeed a guy bigger than him, but its quite another when his power will actually be a factor. I have Floyd by TKO 9.

Wow, dead even

Wow, haven't seen a poll like this in a while - dead even for both of them. Well, I'm going to weigh in and pick Hatton. I believe he is the underdog in this fight though, and he hopefully has some plan of attack for cutting through Mayweather's defense. If not, he is going to be worn down and beat up. Anyways, I'm sticking with Hatton even though he'll probably lose and give Mayweather just one more thing to brag about and reinforce how good he thinks he is (unfortunately he is...)
admin's picture

And the winner is

Mayweather - by TKO in the 10th. He dominated most of the fight. Hatton tried to bully him and didn't come to the fight with any type of strategy other than to try and get inside and wrestle his way to victory. He stayed true to his form, but not the best idea against Mayweather. Mayweather stays undefeated and the ego inflates some more.

Mayweather

Mayweather is P4P the greatest fighter right now. Yes a brawl is good once in a while, but boxing is about strategy and out thinking your oppenet, I want to see someone domnite the fight, and that's what Mayweather did. Give Mayweather some cerdit.
