Re: Basement Knock Out

Being an absolute novice, am I correct in saying the correct defense against this flurry would be to stop going back, look at the attacker and use the uppercut?

Re: Basement Knock Out

im not that experienced either but i would say either try and slide back to the side get your bearings and defend yourself or start going back on him backing up only makes it easier for the other guy to run at you and hit you with more force plus it gives them confidence that they might knock you out soon

Re: Basement Knock Out

Uhm...

I wouldn't box in your living-room. Ha! That's step number one. At least use a backyard, garage, basement, something without couches and a TV (i.e. obstacles that you're likely to brain yourself on).

Also, no wrestling in boxing. Doesn't fly.

Defense: I like your idea of the uppercut. That'd get the job done. Also, don't retreat, shell-up if you have to, stay calm, and throw short-sharp punches inside his wide, flailing ones. If you have to try and evade, take steps to your left or right, NEVER straight back. Uhm...man, I don't even know. IT WAS IN YOUR LIVING ROOM!! Alright, here I go: When someone has all that forward momentum. Try and brace yourself, and stick your shoulder in his chest. You'll be safer from wide punches in close like that. And most likely, he'll step back to get range, when he does, you can catch him.

PS: If you're not gonna wear a helmet, at least get a mouth-guard. Friendships are often short-lived when you start losing teeth. And really, (from personal experience) before you spar, you really want to get some instruction, some fundamentals down, or at the least, have someone who knows what they're doing oversee (ref) for you.

Re: Basement Knock Out

PS: You should really read the article on this site about sparring. It lays out some very good points that you would be well served to follow. Safety stuff, you know? Don't want anyone to get hurt...

Take care...Good luck!

Re: Basement Knock Out

One thing you notice with the pros is the use of the head when working inside. I can't really find anything on this. When part of the head should you use? Is it safe to use anything other than the forehead and what should you be aiming to hit? How do you safely train head work in sparring? I can't find the hints on sparring, where about are they?

Re: Basement Knock Out

You're talking about headbutts, right?

I like it. I'm gonna start a new post in the "technique" forum. There should be something on here about the dirty tricks of boxing, cause there are a lot. Even a person who isn't personally a dirty fighter, should be aware of the tricks so that they know what to look for.

Mal: Check that post out in the "Technique" Forum, and hopefully I can answer your question.
