As far as I know, most YMCA's have dropped their boxing programs (at least in the city of Chicago they have). However this might vary depending upon your location, I'm not sure. On the positive side, most Y's do have a heavy-bag and a speed bag set up. This in mind, there are usually boxers who work out at the Y. There are also bulletin boards up at various locations at most Y's. What I did (which worked pretty well) was post an ad on one of the bulletins saying something like, "Beginner boxer looking for basic instruction (heavy-bag/speed-bag technique), etc..." add whatever you want to that.Be wary of course, meet them only at the gym, essentially screen them before you accept their help. Make sure they're trustworthy people. I had no negative experiences when I went this route.
For actual boxing lessons, on the other hand, you'd probably want to find an actual boxing gym. A YMCA won't have a ring, or sparring partners. And the extent of what a fellow boxer could show you (at the Y) is how to properly hit the bags. At an actual gym you'd have a real coach who could teach you technique, and really make you into a boxer.
Good luck!!
