Speed and Punches
I'm new to this boxing thing...not too experienced. I'm not looking to getting in the ring but more trying to learn the technique for self defense. my question 4 now is how do you get your speed up doing these punches? i heard speed is more important than power.

Re: Boxing Punches

Speed, in a lot of ways, is more important than power. There are lots of ways to improve it. Practice is one. A lot of speed is form. Practice throwing the punches correctly, and speed will come along naturally. Another way, is shadow-boxing with weighted gloves. It's just like a batter putting those weights on his bat when he warms up. You get used to throwing that extra weight, so that when you don't have it, you swing/punch faster and harder. Rhythm/Speed bags are also great for improving hand-speed.

Good luck!

No worries. There's a lot

No worries. There's a lot that you can accomplish all on your own, outside of the gym. I've been working on my own for over 2 years now, and have come a long way. Working on your form and shadow-boxing is great, and will help with your punches. However, especially if you're worried about self-defense, the best way to improve is in sparring with an actual opponent. So if the chance ever arises, if you get your hands on some money, a gym would be your best bet. A lot of fighting (successfully) is confidence, and being able to remain calm and collected under duress. And really the only way to do that is to do it a lot. So, in the meantime work on your punches, and if the opportunity presents itself, jump on the chance to sharpen your skills against a real opponent.

Good luck!!

I have always adhered to two principles. The first one is to train hard and get in the best possible physical condition. The second is to forget all about the other fellow until you face him in the ring and the bell sounds for the fight.
