I started boxing recently during this summer but strangely when I go to hit my bag, the 2nd series of bone joints under my knuckles hit the bag at the same time too. If I hold my forearm our straight and make a fist the bone joint on my pointer finger is just about even with my middle finger knuckle. Is it just bad luck that my hands are like this or am I punching incorrectly? (I don't use gloves, right now I just wrap my hands) Thanks in advance.

Knuckles
Do you mean the joints closest to your finger tips, or the ones closest to your knuckles? If your hitting with your joints closest to your finger tips, i would think that your not clenching your first before impact. Which could cause you to jar your fingers. but if you mean joint closest to your knuckles, you would be fine i think as so do most peoples i would guess.

yea, it's the joint closer to the knuckles, thanks for your insight and advice, I guess I'm not used to hitting with both of them

COntact

Hey, Kung -

Contact should be made primarily with either the first two knuckles or the last three knuckles. The flat of your fingers (between the knuckle and the first joint) should make contact. However, if you're landing primarily with that first joint, then you're doing something wrong. If it's with the hook, try to turn your punch over a little more (i.e. don't come in at too sharp an angle), if it's the jab, make sure that your wrist is straight and your hand is not slightly angled up.

Also, you should be using gloves when you hit the bag. Proper punching technique or not, you need to protect the more fragile bones in your hands.

Good luck, I hope that helps!!
