Life of equiptment question
Thu, 2008-02-21 22:47
Hi, I am new to the site and new to the sport. Hooked bad. I had a few questions regaurding equiptment and life expectency. I have been working out on a brand new Everlast never-tear heavy bag and after about 25 workouts I have noticed a few things. First, the heavy bag is showing some wear already with the black top coat peeling in some spots. Primarily in the chin high area which Im assuming gets the most wear. Next, my left bag glove has already worn a hole in it. The gloves are the Everlast Neo-prene bag gloves.
My questions are these:
- Is this normal wear for this equiptment or am I doing something wrong.
- If it is normal wear are there any "Tricks" that will increase the life of this stuff.
- Should I try a different bag glove? Any suggestions on bag gloves?

First, the heavy bag - It is normal to see some wear and tear, scuff marks, scratches etc... You haven't said what kind of bag it is though. A good leather or canvas bag is going to last forever, no matter how much you hit it. Short of cutting it with something or really, really mistreating it, it will be fine. Now if you bought a vinyl bag which explains the peeling, it will not last as long - will crack, peel, and generally dissolve in front of you.
The bag gloves - I don't have much experience with Neo-prene gloves, but again a good set of leather gloves are not going to develop holes or wear out for a long, long, long time. I still have a pair that have gone through thousands of sessions - so after 25 if you've got a hole, you've got junk. I have noticed the insides of some leather gloves will lose their padding, but it always happens from the inside out - never develop holes from outside in, unless torn or cut.
The only trick I can suggest is not to buy cheap gloves and stick to leather. The initial cost will more than pay for itself over time.
