I have just started using a heavy bag for exercise purposes. After I have worked-out, I have what looks like blood blisters between my pinky and ring fingers. Is this usual, or am I doing something wrong to cause them?

Hitting wrong

It's likely you are using poor technique - hitting with your ring/little finger is not a good idea. You want to hit with your index and middle knuckles. The little blood blisters you see are the result of pinching your skin as you hit with those knuckles.

This is actually one of the most common questions asked here. If you do a search for knuckles you'll come up with some more in depth answers. It seems a whole lot of people like to turn their fists in when they hit. Hold your arm out in front of you and and ensure your wrist is straight - not bent any way and noticethe straight line down your arm to your first and second knuckles - that is where you want to hit and that is where the most power is going to come from.

on the subject of kuckles...
My punching is getting better, less blood blisters on the little finger. But I am bruising a lot on my middle and index knuckles. I've been double wrapping my hands with Method 2, and wearing 14 ounce bag gloves to practice rounds with a friend on mitts. But the bruising/soreness makes me worthless for a day or two after. So I'm wondering: 1) How can I help my hands/knuckles heal quicker so I can train more often. 2) What else can I do to prevent bruising besides lots of protection? 3) What can I do to strengthen my knuckles? Thanks.

Knuckles
I wonder what the heavy bag you are hitting feels like. I first bought a cheap everlast bag that I got at Sports Authority, and it has areas on it that are like concrete. If I happen to hit one of these places with force, I nearly break my hand. I was told by several people that heavy bags are hard and you have to get used to hitting them, but they aren't supposed to be like this pile of pooh that I bought first. They told me the bag would soften up over time. I beat the tar out of that thing with a baseball bat for a full afternoon, (which, by the way, is a pretty hard workout in itself...lol) and its still like a rock in places. If your bag is that hard, get a different one. I got a century water filled bag that weighs around 125 pounds, and it is very consistent. Its a bit soft, but its never gonna hurt me. The gym where I train during the week has eight different heavy bags. Some soft, some fairly firm....but none that feel like hitting that everlast turd I purchased first. You shouldn't be hurting your hands on the bag. If you are just getting into this, there is a good chance your technique needs some sort of improvement....but I would bet your bag is similar to the one I was referring to above. What kind of gloves are you using on the bag? Brand, style, and weight?
