There's no substitute for a good coach and a good gym, especially for beginners. Trying to learn purely from instructionals or anything other than in-person instruction from a qualified coach is a recipie for disaster. Make a list of all the gyms in your area that offer boxing. Visit each of them, talk to the coaches and see which ones you feel comfortable at. Go back to those and see if they offer a trial membership. If you like that gym, cool. If not, go on to the next. You may find that boxing's not for you or you may find that you want to go further than you originally intended. Good luck.

Get a class

Chrissy,

I recommend you find a boxing gym or a boxing class around your area. Many colleges offer boxing classes and that might be a good way to get in touch with coaches in the local area who offer private lessons. I wouldn't recommend purchasing a DVD because the majority of the fundamentals of boxing are found online. I could give you some video links if you'd like. Most of what boxing comes down to is practice more so than anything else. Focus on the fundamentals. You do not need fancy equipment, machines, or expensive gym memberships. I would learn proper boxing stance first, then move on to footwork. Then finally learn the 4 basic punches and then move on to defensive manuevers. I hope you find what you are looking for. Best of luck.

That was always the difference between Muhammad Ali and the rest of us. He came, he saw, and if he didn't entirely conquer -- he came as close as anybody we are likely to see in the lifetime of this doomed generation.
