Hi, I am a college student in Durham, NC and want to start boxing. I have searched everywhere in the city and can't find a single boxing gym. The only two listed in the yellow pages are closed down. I really want to start boxing. I was hoping you could give me some advice on finding a gym or a trainer. Or what to do if I can't find any of those. I played high school football and have spent my first two college years dedicated to lifting. I spent the last four months cutting down my body fat to 7-8% and getting in as good of cardio shape as I can so I would be ready for training. I really want to step in the ring within five months. Please, let me know what to do. Thanks.

Durham Boxing gyms

I have listings for two Durham gyms - hopefully they aren't the same two that you found in the phone book:

Inner City Youth and Boxing Gym, 1212 Angier Ave, Durham, NC - ph: 919-441-1766. email - onebadjab@hotmail.com

I've emailed this gym for their rates and qualifications, but haven't heard back yet.

The other:

Durham School of Boxing, 715 E Geer St, Building B-2, Durham, NC, ph: 919-667-0942.

They have something of a website that is still active so perhaps they are too.

Hope that helps. If it doesn't, you can always consider putting a small ad in the local paper looking for a boxing trainer with amateur experience. They should know the ins and outs of getting you into the ring in your area.
