Boxing Weight Classes

What are Boxing Weight Classes?

Boxing weight classes are a way of ensuring that boxers of similar size and weight are matched up. While one can argue that a true champion would fight anyone, fighting within one's weight class makes for better fights. Bigger boxers have more natural weight behind their punches. Heavyweights tend to inflict more knockouts but the fighters tend to be slower. Featherweights, on the other hand, are blindingly fast. Dividing up boxing into weight classes helped to reduce the number of lop sided victories and the ability of boxers to pick on smaller opponents.

It is not uncommon for boxers to move into and out of weight classes. As they grow older, they could move from middleweight to light heavyweight in order to challenge themselves more or to take a title in two different weight classes. Nothing says one has to stay in one class for one's entire career. If one can add or lose the weight, one can fight in whatever class one wants.

how do you gain weight

how do you gain weight

admin's picture

In a nutshell...

Eat more calories than you burn and you will add weight. If muscle is what you want to put on, be careful of where your calories are coming from (mix of protein, carbs, fats). Read the nutrition portion of the site for more info.

I know when you eat more

I know when you eat more calories you will gain weight. But I eat and eat and eat but nothing happens. What do I do?

There's no secret

If you are eating and eating and still not gaining weight, then you aren't eating enough. There is no secret here, you simply have to put more calories in than you burn. I'll bet you have no idea how many calories you eat in a day or have any idea how many calories you burn in a day. Until you figure those two things out, you're not going to achieve what you want to achieve. As I said, read the nutrition part of the site. It will make you determine those calculations and tell you what you need to eat - how many calories of each (carbs, protein, fats) to add mass based on how many calories you are burning. Until you do that and know for certain you are in fact eating more than your body is using - you're doomed to failure.

You can eat like a horse and still not be eating enough - at least that's what it may feel like. You need to get scientific with it and monitor what you're putting in your mouth.

Like I said, there is no secret here, it's simple math - calories in vs calories out - that's it.

Losing Weight

I burn off about 800 calories a day doing exersice - both anaerobic and aerobic.
I have tried counting the amount of calories goin in/out for 3 weeks there has been no difference in body fat which i need to get rid of for fights.
I am naturally big anyway so is that why i cant lose fat?

BMR

Are you taking into account what your body naturally burns?

Let's take your example here and assume you are a 6'2", male, weighing 230lbs, age: 25:

1. Your BMR (what you just need to survive) = 2280
2. If you are burning 800 calories a day, you will maintain the weight you have by eating = 2280+800 = 3080 calories a day.
3. If you are eating less than 3080 calories you will lose weight, if you eat more, you will gain weight.

There is another factor involved and that is the mix of carbs/proteins/fats - therefore a certain percentage of those calories above have to be of each to maximize performance/weight loss.

If you aren't losing weight, I would say you aren't calculating your calories right. Everyone will lose weight eventually if you are putting in less than you are taking out.

And again, all of these calculators and step by step instructions for figuring it all out including how long it will take you to lose the weight you want to lose are found in the nutrition portion of the site.

I think that you can box at an older age. I 44 stoped smoking 6 months ago and started traing again on weights and boxing. when My work slows in the winter I'll try to get some sparing matches to see if I can fight. Never have I had a match in the ring. But looking forward to trying. Madchef
