Boxing Punches

You can't win if you don't punch!

There are four basic offensive moves in boxing:

These boxing punches can be delivered anywhere above the waist and it is best to mix up where they are delivered.

You cannot win a battle without a great offense. You can have the best defense in the world, never allowing your opponent to hit you, but you cannot win if you don't hit him. That of course is where these boxing punches come in.

A couple of things you want to remember when thinking about the offensive part of your game. First, you always want to keep your opponent guessing. The worst thing you can do is forecast your punches or get in the habit of delivering the same punches in the same order over and over again. If your opponent is any good, he will quickly pick up on it and the effectiveness of your offense will be diminished if not completely obliterated.

You can forecast your punches in a variety of ways. Most common are wide sweeping punches and dropping your shoulder to kind of wind up and punch. All signs of a true beginner and not what you want to be known as. You have to watch other things as well like your breathing, facial expressions, head movement, the list goes on and on. Put on your poker face when you enter the ring.

Second, don't always focus on delivering the power punch. Have them at the ready but give a constant barrage of jabs. These smaller hits over the course of a fight can do a tonne of damage, don't take a lot of energy, and can win the fight for you.

So, with those points in mind, let's get technical. Oh, and one other note, I'm going to describe the punches for right hander's, that is left foot forward. If you're a left hander, please don't feel offended, just reverse the instructions.

A final note on breathing. Don't hold your breath, which, believe it or not, is the natural thing to do when you punch. With every punch breathe out through pursed lips making a quick short "fffffff" sound. This ensures you are breathing and aids in your power distribution. It's like karate guys yelling whenever they punch or kick. Kind of centers you...if that makes any sense.

One last thing to mention. Never forget about the hand which is not punching. It is a common error, especially for beginners to forget about the hand which is supposed to be guarding when the other is punching. This is especially obvious while throwing the jab with the left hand. Watch yourself in the mirror and you will be sure to notice that while you are jabbing with the left, your right mysteriously slides down to chest height instead of being up protecting the chin.

It's natural, gravity is pulling at it all the time, but everyone, especially in the beginning has to make a conscious effort to keep their hands up where they should be. Don't worry, it's even harder to remember when you have both hands flying out delivering combinations as we'll see next.

Punching

Im right handed and it feel's wierd to fight southpaw my left does'nt feel as quick on the release. Once in a street fight i was leading w/my right and strained it at the elbow, now if i throw a punch right handed my elbow hurt's like hell i mean stopping dead in my track hurt. What the hell am i doing wrong??

You probably hyper extended

You probably hyper extended your punch. That means when you punched, you extended your arm straight out, and the momentum of the punch and your arm tried to make your elbow bend in the opposite way. Put ice on it (not heat) and stay off it for around 2-3 weeks. Next time you work out, use an elbow brace for about a month or so until it is completely healed (not just feels healed).

Hello guest - if your not a

Hello guest - if your not a lefty or southpaw don't try to be one. You probably strained yourself throwing punches that are unorthodox for you. Although it may be a good idea to practice the stance and punches it probably isn't a good idea to fight from that stance if you're a righty. Get yourself checked out. I would say see an orthopedic doctor. Possibly x-rays / MRI to see if there is any long term damage. Next if that checks out ok get a referral to a physical therapist to rehab your elbow. Finally - stay out of street fights unless someone won't stop harrassing you and you have to defend yourself. You want to fight - step into the ring. Peace, cheers, stay out of trouble and take care. right handed hook?

if you are a right handed fighter(conventional stance) that is to say you fight with a left hand lead you are not throwing a right hook. this is a common misnomer. only southpaws throw right hooks.
The punches for a conventional fighter (left hand lead) are
left jab
left hook
straight right
right cross
left uppercut
right uppercut, the punches for a southpaw (right hand lead) are
right jab
right hook
straight left
left cross
left uppercut
right uppercut
what your throwing is a right cross that is "outta control" . the hook and the cross are two different punches. problems arise when they are thought to be the same. there are those out there that think the term right cross is another term for straight right , it's not. the fact that you called it a right hook leads me to believe you are using it and delivering as a hook and that you putting to much on it and/or your hands and feet are not in sync.
this is a "up close and personal punch"the punch is thown after you get inside with a left lead jab, hook or hooking off the jab get your feet in there balanced position approx. shoulder with give or take left foot pointed foward right foot back a slight angle outward knees slightly bent bend upper body bent foward right hand at the chin twist at the waist to the left, pivot your right foot so that your heel is raised you knee is still bent, raising you right elbow as you turn this will automatically start to bring your right fist out , pushing off with your right foot but not raising the height of your body (known as standing up in the punch)follow through with your lats your chin stays down glued to your upper chest your left is still up and tight to your left jaw your right hand should not travel beyond the line of you left shoulder however should your oppenant read the punch and "steps out" to his right your left you can extend the punch by straighting your arm hitting him on his way out. if you are going to stay there follow with a left hook to bring your body up into position(hook and cross combination was used by Tyson alot but it was Rocky Marciano who was the master of it) otherwise punch duck and step out to your right away from his power if he is right handed practice this punch slowly feel the groove of it. form! form! form! speed and power will take care of themselves once you find the balance of the punch.

Correct Jab

Hey I am a beginner , trying to perfect my jab. I feel that it is quick in and out, and I have my hands in the right position when recovering. This is a goofy question, but where on my hand should the jab land? I heard the front two knuckles, but what feels best for me are the middle two. Are there disadvantages to this?

Not Goofy at all

It's a good question, and not the first time its been asked. If you hold your arm out in front of you and ensure your wrist is in line with your arm, you will notice that your middle knuckle points directly at your target. As long as that knuckle hits square, you're good to go. It will probably involve both your first and third knuckles to a lesser extent. This will vary slightly from individual to individual as it depends on exactly how straight your arms/wrist are. In general though, it doesn't really matter all that much if you contact with 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 - although 1 and 2 are usually stronger knuckles.

I have always adhered to two principles. The first one is to train hard and get in the best possible physical condition. The second is to forget all about the other fellow until you face him in the ring and the bell sounds for the fight.
