The Straight Right or Right Cross - Boxing's Natural Punch

The Straight Right - 2

This is the punch you are going to love because it feels the most natural and is a power punch because it involves a re-distribution of weight. It is because of this weight redistribution that you must also be careful in how and when you use it. Anytime you redistribute your weight you place yourself in a vulnerable position for the split second your weight is in transfer. If your opponent times it right, you'll pay the price.

To Deliver

From the guard position (regular boxer's stance), your right hand goes out towards the target, again, in a straight line from your chin. Unlike the jab though, as the arm goes out your torso torques to the left and you pivot on the ball of your rear foot, moving your weight forward into the punch. You should feel your back involved in this one.

After impact, get your right hand back to the guard and get your boxer's stance back as quickly as possible. Remember accelerate out, SNAP, accelerate back. When throwing the straight right be careful not to dip your shoulder or wind up, both tell tale signs that it is coming.

yo jack if u really are left

yo jack if u really are left handed it should be ur stronger punch or u have just not been training it at all or u are not getting the tech right "practice is the mother of all skills " and if u leave a punch out of training you will hate urslef for it, when u have to go back a train one punch over and over

Jack you could try training,

Jack you could try training, there are many training guides on here, though technique is also important, keep practising it :D

Pivot

As admin says, from your boxer stance, (your feet should be at a 45 degree angle to a side) while you throw your hand from your chin, turn the foot that is in the rear inwards to make it point at your opponent. As the other guy says "like you were steping a ciggarette out" except with one turn of that foot. Thats how the pvot part is done. "Isaac's the name, the chins my aim"

Rear foot pivot

It is simply a turn on the ball of your foot. From the normal stance, your foot is at a 45 or more degree angle. When you throw the straight right, you want to transfer the weight from your rear leg forward and that means rotating your hips. In order to do that, you have to twist (pivot) your rear foot so that it is in line and no longer angled. Actually, you twist and lean into the punch, so basically when you throw the punch, your rear heel rises and the foot turns forward. Notice in the video how the rear foot turns - that is the pivot.

Rear foot pivot

I read in a book on boxing about the pivot. Lean forward on the front part of your foot and make like you are crushing peanut shells with your foot. (or maybe a cigarette butt). Hope this helps...

I'm a scrawny 14-year-old boy who just got into boxing and can't punch for anything. I just wanted to know how to make my punches more powerful.

hi guys im 14 too and im in too boxing

hi guys ive just got into boxing aswell. actually i always loved boxin and street fightin but decided to put my skills in to action. i'm gud at the basics just normal jab and apparently my straight rights are really good. i got a really good shot on this guy and crippled him (not really crippling him but he was on the floor). but i was wonderin if you could help me train and tell me what would help me when i'm fighting. i got a weakness though. i cant multi task (typical, right) but i mean i can either be offensive or be defensive but not both and i get really aggressive. i also need some tips to help me put on weight and height and something to help me dodge. thanks tonnes!!!!! kay

Punching stronger

u want to know how to puncher harder its very simple im gifted with it but i still do these workouts the best way to punch harder is not by getting biceps thats jus for the ladies the way to do it is to get dumbells starting at 2 pounds and keep going harder all the way to 10 pounds tops then you perform punches with the dumbbells in your hands while u do this yur hands will statr getting tired then as soon as u do yur normal speed punching with these dumbbells in yur hands take them off and not only will u hit harder and hit faster becuz u have no more weight on yur hands Also workout in the gyms for your shoulders, triceps, ,& forearms(remember these workouts take time it doesn't just happen over night)

Wow!!

Oh wow, i didnt even think about that, thanks a bunch man. I always relied on my natural strength itself and making it better. But i forgot all about that. That makes a whole lot of sense, because by making yourself gt used to the extra weight you would naturally increaseyour strength. I need to go pick up a set after i get to the ring today. (If i ever go to sleep anyways. The stuff on the site is so helpfull and makes you feel stronger/smarter to read and learn.Cant wait to try out) "Isaac's the name, the chins my aim"

A VISCIOUS combo

The straight cross IS a definate killer. In my opinion, in oder to have the punch at it's most effectve You need to set it up. Okay,.... work your way towards your opponent with a few jabs to close the distance. Then throw a jab (rember its done with your hand that is on the same side as your lead leg), then when you snap back UNLEASH the cross immediately with the other hand. This,..if done correctly is my favorite thing to see. I learned this from watching Iron Mike Tyson in a fight . He KO'D someone with this combo and BOY did it look pretty and smooth. A variety of boxers use this combo as it is very effective if timed correctly, leaving the opponent open for the headshot. "Isaac's the name, the chins my aim"

how should

question, when u said a vicious combo is to jab a few times to close the distance then imidiatley follow with a right cross, does it matter where the jab goes? should i go for the body or the face, then follow with the right cross?
