Boxing Nutrition

Would you put diesel in a gas burning engine?  Do you put tinfoil in a microwave?  Some things just don't work without the right fuel, so stop putting crap in your body.

Milk Label Boxers, and athletes in general, have specific nutritional requirements.  In order to become the best boxer around and reach your maximum potential, you have to be able to control what you eat.  As a boxer, or any person really, you need to know:
  • How many calories your body requires daily just to survive.
  • How many calories you need to eat to lose weight.
  • How many calories you need to eat to add muscle.
  • Of those calories you eat, what is the makeup of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and other vitamins you need to optimally fuel your body.
  • How many calories you are actually burning on any given day taking into account your activities in addition to your basic metabolic rate?
Be very aware that I am not prescribing a diet here.  As far as I'm concerned, all diets tend to rob you of some essential nutrient whether it be carbohydrates (low-carb diets), proteins, or fat.  Yes, you actually need fat in your diet.

What diets do tend to do is make you aware of what you are eating.  It is so easy to just eat when you are hungry and even easier to grab the easiest thing around and that is probably some kind of junk food or fast food.  Is your cupboard full of chips, snacks, and other crap?  If so, guess what you are eating.
A fit body
You have to change your mindset if you want to be a better boxer.  It requires self discipline and a strong desire to achieve your optimal level of fitness.  Sure, food can be made to taste good.  Even healthy food can taste great, but you have to remember that food is fuel.  Whether it tastes good or not, you are eating it for a reason.  You are eating it so your body can extract the nutrients and vitamins it needs to build more muscle, make you stronger, and make you faster.

Basically it comes down to choice.  You either choose to eat right or you don't.  There are varying degrees of bad eating, but quite frankly, you choose everytime you put something in your mouth.  Make a conscious decision right now to analyze everything you eat.  If it isn't doing you any good, why in the hell would you eat it?  And if "because it tastes good" is your answer, then check your priorities.

Being able to alter your body at will is a power only few can master, but everyone has the potential to do.  Once you can add muscle or shed unwanted fat whenever you decide to, you will realize there really isn't anything in life you can not do.

Unfit Boxer Being aware of what you are eating is essential if you want to create changes or have your body perform at its optimum level.  If you're reading this hoping to lose some weight, you have to realize that you cannot lose weight if you are eating more calories than you are burning.  If you're reading this as a boxer looking to improve your stamina, endurance, strength and energy levels in the ring, you have to realize that everything that goes into your body is either going to help in that goal or hinder it.

You can blame your current state on genetics, your environment, lack of time, lack of money or whatever you want, but in the end those of you who decide that they can actually control what they eat and how they spend their time are the ones who are going to excel and realize their dreams one day.  The rest of you might as well go watch TV.

I'm going to take you step by step through the process of learning what to eat and how much.  In the end I'll even show you how to get some meal plans you can try for yourself.  You can skip straight to them if you want, but I would hope you will actually take the time to learn why you are eating what I am suggesting so you can eventually make your own templates and suggest your own recipes to post on the site for others to use.

boxing start

If you want to get into fighting shape, then you need to work hard to get there. Don't start off too hard, or else you will overwhelm yourself and lose motivation. One thing that would help is to get an idol, someone that you want to be like. Also take a picture of yourself ever so often to see your results. Then do a fitness test to see where you are at, and then do one every now and then to see where you are improving. I use the military's fitness test to see my results. pull ups- as many as you can do without stopping push ups- as many as you can do in 2 minutes sit ups- as many as you can do in 2 minutes 2 mile run as fast as you can if you are in really good physical condition you should be able to do 15- 20 pull ups 60 and up in push ups 70 and up in sit ups and 13 minutes or less on that 2 mile run then once you see where you stand, you can browse the net and find a work out routine suitable for you. But if you use mostly bodyweight exercises, then you want to take the fitness test so that way you know where to start. You don't want to overwhelm yourself, but at the same time, you don't want it to be too easy. some friends of mine say they just do the fitness test every other day, or 5 days out of the week and it works for them. But, everybody's got their own tastes. I hope this helps you out, and wish you the best of luck.

Weight Loss

1. Walk/Run 5km a day. Build up to being able to run 5km. Do 50 Pushups, 50 Squats, 50 Situps, and 50 Pullups every second day (Youtube these exercises if you dont know how to do them).
2. Drink 3 litres of water per day
3. Cut out sugar, less than 10g of sugar per 100g of whatever food you are eating (Check the back label).
4. Eat 5-7 servings of green vegetables per day
5. If you are eating meat, eat only the best lean meat otherwise you are consuming too much fat. Do not eat chicken unless it is organic.
6. Eat carbohydrates in the morning, no carbs at night
7. keep your servings to 6 meals at the size of 3 of your fists put together.
8. Add Tuna, Beans, Eggs, Fish for protein to your lunch meal.
9. Write down your goal weight and work out how many calories you need to burn to get to it, there are 7700 calories in 1kg of fat, this will help you stop eating foods you don't need to eat (E.G. to lose 10kg you need to burn 77000 calories over 10 weeks etc...)
10. Start boxing as soon as you hit your goal weight and feel fit enough.

try taking a photo of how

try taking a photo of how you are now. train hard and eat low fat for 3 weeks. dont be too concerned about restricting calories but really restrict ur fat. train hard for 3 weeks like ur up for a world title and train every day. have light days to rest but train every day till you sweat. if you dont sweat it isnt hard enough. after 3 weeks get pumped and do some more photos. when you see what you can do in three weeks set urself a new goal and go from there. good food good rest and training. you will succeed.also set urself a targat lets say 1200m run. time urself and record ur progress. record all ur progress cos its such a buzz to break ur own records. you wil break ur records every week with average effort. with high effort you will smash em. good luck

boxing analysis

hey, I am supposed to make an analysis on boxing, with regards to nutrition training and performance enhancing method/substances affecting human performance. I was wondering if you could help me find anything that has to do with this, whether being from this site or another site, as long as it is a reliable source.

Im 5 foot 8 and weigh

Im 5 foot 8 and weigh 58kg......how do i find out how much of my body is muscle and fat percentage wise?????
admin's picture

Easiest Way

The easiest way is to create a free account here on the site. Then go to your profile page and look about halfway down where you will see a link to add a progress report. Click that, fill in the measurements (for men: neck, abdomen, weight, height - for women - all that plus hips) and based on a Navy formula for predicting bodyfat, once you hit submit, it will tell you how much bodyfat you have and whether you are currently at a good level or not. You can also add before and after pictures here if you like. Take a look at everyone's latest progress reports to get an idea of what I mean.

Alternatively, you can visit the boxing nutrition portion of the site - follow the link from the top menu - and it will lead you through figuring out your bodyfat % using a 7 site caliper test (but then you need a body caliper).

pot

I want to get really into boxing...but Im curious...will I need to quit smoking in order to be able to fight my best? It is a pretty big part of my life but I want boxing to be also...if it will affect my performance a lot...is there any way to get around it?
admin's picture

Are you serious?

I don't mean to be a dick, but you can't be serious? You can't possibly think that smoking pot or cigarettes is not going to affect your performance.

To answer your question, yes, it will affect your performance, and no, there is no way to get around it. It is going to affect your lung capacity (VO2 max) - ability to pull oxygen out of the air you breathe. It is going to be detrimental to your stamina and endurance and in the case of pot - it dulls your senses/reflexes not to mention the effects of all the other chemicals.

If you truly want to fight your best - lose the smoking.

nichole's picture

well you could have said

well you could have said that WITHOUT being a dick but thanks for the advice...I wasnt sure if it would have that much of an impact

im i ok?

hey im boxin everyday and im losin size fast. is that normal?? how can i put on muscle fast?

Weight training for combat

Weight training for combat sports (not weight lifting) is great for gaining solid, usable muscle, however, the size you're losing now
might be body fat, which is a good thing.
Training everyday might be a little too much. Even well conditioned athletes need a rest day at least once a week, especially if your workouts are intense.

I wouldn't be too worried about losing size unless your heart is set on the next weight class up. You might be more natural in a lower weight class.
More importantly, how is your strength, speed and bodyfat level?

Increasing muscle mass takes time. Good intense heavy-bag work supplemented with functional resistance training will do the trick. Just be patient.

i am 15 years old and I weight 230 pounds. I just want to lose weight so i can join a boxing gym and improve on my fighting skills. What should I do to get in to top physical shape

Guests's picture

Top Physical Shape

Hi, Angel! The first thing you should do is work on cardio and light weight training. As for cardio(for weight loss), start simply by going for a long walk, walk the dog, chase the dog, anything to get you moving. As soon as you feel able, try jogging for as long as you can, then walk, then jog again, then walk. pretty soon, you'll be able to jog a route, then, if you want, run. As for the weight training, you can start that immediately. Get 5 lb weights and get on a 3 day program. Here's a link for a 3 day that I do.
http://www.intense-workout.com/workout_routines.html
Also, as fo diet, cut portions, cut carbs(but not completely), and eat 5 to 6 SMALL meals a day, drink water, and, if you can, don't eat after 6:30 at night. Good luck!

Losing Weight for Angel

At 15, your body still has a lot of maturing to do, but it's never too early to start setting fitness goals.
Remember, the key to fat loss is Cardio work! This could be running, jumping rope, light sparring or sweatin' to the oldies (just kidding).
If you're also doing resistance training (weights, bodyweight exercises, bungy drills, etc.), you'll most likely be packing on some muscle mass as well, which could completely offset your fat loss when you step on the scale. My point being, don't be a slave to the bathroom scale. A full-length mirror or some photos of yourself is a much better barometer of your degree of body fat. If you've got cuts and definition where you never had any a few weeks earlier, then you are losing fat no matter if the scale says you went up or down in weight.
Your cardio work could be long and slow or brief and intense, or a combination using interval training.
Search the internet for articles on these subjects, but your cardio work must be consistant, and as soon as your body can handle it, spend some time in the upper ranges of your heart rate to raise your anaerobic threshold (ability to perform while in oxygen debt). I wish I could be more detailed here, but these are some basics you could investigate and experiment with on your own. At 15, there is a lot to learn. I've been doing this for over 30 years, and I learn new thing all the time. Good luck!

Boxing/Losing Weight too fast

Hi, I have a question. First, I want to let you know that Boxing is not my life. I don't plan to make a career out of it but I enjoy it very much and have been doing it for a year. I'm about 5 "10 and weigh around 160 pounds, my bodyfat % is arond 15%. Now due to my year long training, my endurance and stamina is top notch. I rarely get tired when I train or spar, In short.....I may not look the greatest with my shirt off( my body is toned, and are my abs but I am in no way ripped)..... so my question is... Does it really matter that much that my bodyfat % is so high when compared to most boxers? Is that putting myself in a big disadvantaged position?
