About Me

What would you like to know?

For starters I started boxing when I was 24 and then quit when I was 25. I am now 32 and have been back into the whole thing for a couple of years now.

In my quests for information on the internet I discovered there were very few sites offering people interested in learning how to box on their own any kind of guidance. I ended up buying a bunch of boxing books to use.

Seeing as I have an interest in developing websites and had a little extra time, I decided to build a site to provide what I couldn't find and the result is www.how-to-box.com.

It is based on the numerous books I read and the things I learned along the way to where I am at right now. I have had one official amateur bout and am training for more, however, I have recently moved somewhere there is no gym, no club, and so far no trainers.  At any rate, I will compete again and I believe the things I learned via those books and through my coaches will help me greatly in future bouts.

Professionally and for a living, I am an infantry officer. I train soldiers everyday which gives me a unique perspective on how people learn and develop. Plus I have the opportunity for unofficial matches on occasion.  Skills, which I used in developing this website.

I sincerely hope you find it useful and welcome any comments you may have. Feel free to contact me by email: How To Box

P.S. If you really like the site, I don't mind receiving donations :):).  Every little bit helps in paying for bandwidth, hosting, and programming new features into the site. Thanks.

If you are interested in advertising on the site, I am open to that as well. Anything I can do to pay the bills :) Just contact me at webmaster@how-to-box.com. 10000 unique visitors a month, 6000 registered users...and counting.

Endurance and Stamina

I am currently deployed in Iraq. My question is:What can I do that focuses on building endurance and stamina besides running??
admin's picture

March

I'm sure you've done this, but put your ruck on your back and march - make it as heavy as you can and still maintain a very quick pace -almost to the point where you start breathing really hard. It will not only help with your stamina (assuming you push yourself), but you'll also build overall strength (especially in your legs and back).

If you're tired of ruckmarching, you can try weights in some sort of circuit training routine. For example,
10 Burpees, 10 Power Cleans, 10 Military Press, 10 squats, 10 deadlifts, 10 squat jumps. Repeat for 20 minutes with minimal rest. Basically any kind of hard work where you limit your bodies ability to rest will increase endurance and stamina. Running hills/sand is my favorite and I'm sure there is enough sand around...Stay safe.

Upgrading account

Hey I'm from Australia and want to upgrade my account so I can view your training program, but I'm only 13 and my parents won't let me spend any money, especially on the internet because they're very old fashioned and don't understand "the e-mail machine".  When I try to click the links for upgrading for free they all send me an e-mail transcript and I don't understand how to get the reward word.  Can you explain it to me?

Re: Username and password

Hi, Congrats on the site. I am trying to get a username and password and then I will be making a donation as a thanks for the hard work your putting in. I want to start the 12 week routine a.s.a.p, I have filled in the details and it says it will send me an e-mail but I keep checking and nothing has arrived. How long does it normally take? Thanks again, Tony.

Re: Username and password

It's usually instantly sent. Could be that the email is getting trapped in a spam filter? Ensure how-to-box.com is on your good to go list. If that still doesn't work, send me an email at aaronluhning@hotmail.com or webmaster@how-to-box.com and I'll do it manually.

Hello, Niranjan!  I'm

Hello, Niranjan!

I'm not too sure how things are set up over there, but the best approach would be to find a boxing gym. If that's not available, check out this site more in-depth. It has great instructional tools that will teach you the basics and get you familiarized with the fundamentals. It also offers great workouts that will improve your conditioning and performance. Please post any specific questions you might come across.

Good luck!!

I used your site to get started into boxing a few months ago, but stopped and now am doing it again. I had a login before but I'm not sure I remembered it correctly. When I try to receive a new password, the site isn't recognizing the email address, but when I try to make a new login, it says it is taken, can you help me?

YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD . . . .

I just started at a local boxing gym and am 63 years old...I have a bad knee and wanted an aerobic workout that would (1) not further injure my knee through pounding (2) afford good aerobic exercise (3) be something that would interest me so I can stick with it. I have never been an athlete and found my first lesson (group) humbling...but also everything I was looking for. I just know that if I stick with it I'm going to age more gracefully through aerobic conditioning and perhaps more confidently as well. I'm wondering how many other old guys there might be out there like me....and what their own stories are in terms of getting into the Sport of Kings - the Sweet Science. Dogparkdaddy

White Collar Fighting

If I wanted to do a white collar fight, I would like to know how to go about doing one. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears, I'm thinking of maybe one day doing a real boxing match as I would like to do it professionally. I would like to hear what someone thinks, I'm 33 years old as of December 2, 2007.

Nice Site, interesting stuff.

Hello, was searching the internet for boxing tutorials (as want to learn to box)and found your site which I think is really cool. Found some of the info really interesting.
Cool. Thanks.

One thing I would improve if I was you, is perhaps the organization of your shop. As find it hard to look for things without sifting through all things. For example, when looking at DVD's, perhaps would be an idea to put them into categories, as for example, if you were looking for boxing tuition DVD's, you would have to sift through them all.

I know you can search, but depending on what the DVD is called, you may or may not get the right results returned.
Anyway, won't put me off and buying some things from you, just means I will have to take a bit of time sifting through everything.

And don't worry, your not the only site that is like this.
The multi-national Amazon website mail order is really hard to find things on sometimes as well.

Anyway. Like your site.

Will be back soon when I have some green stuff.
Cheers
Jus

Subcategories

Thanks for the kind words and I've added some subcategories to make browsing a little easier. Like you said, you can always search - for instance if you are looking for instructional boxing DVDs, just search the boxing dvds with the keyword instructional.

Website improvements

Nice one. I think you have done a really good job organizing your website into categories. Make shopping so much easier. When I have money, I will be back. Unfortunately, am in between jobs at moment. Even though I have loads of qualifications including a Degree from a world class college! But there we go. Where I live, the local job market has been over populated with imported foreign workers from poor countries, as they will work for peanuts as the money is worth a great deal more in their own countries, which is ace for them, and crap for unemployed locals. I am also in my 30's, and just getting back into training. Spent the last 4 years married to a Jehovah Witness girl who was against any form of exercise that resembled fighting. Which is a real shame, as I grew up doing karate, and over the last ten years have trained in a number of martial arts for fun. The last few months have been really interested in boxing, as I know boxing is superior to most other forms of punching found in martial arts. Not only interested in Sport Boxing, but am quite interested in the old bare knuckle boxing and hand conditioning for self defense. The way bare knuckle fighters hold their guard is perhaps more practical for self defense, and their hand conditioning is definitely more practical, however, I am contemplating not conditioning my hands as thoroughly as a bare knuckle fighter and am considering buying a pair of dark gel hand wraps and adapting them into gloves for wearing on the street (in dangerous areas). Please don't get the wrong idea though, I am not a trouble maker, I have just recently been victimized by some really idiot hard drug dealing criminals who use really nasty tactics to assault their victims. I am simply protecting my life, as I do not want to end up dead, in hospital or in prison because of these idiots. Anyway, good improvements on the site. Wish you good business for 2008 and hope to be back soon. Just one other quick idea. You may consider putting a shop icon at the top of the website, as this would give people a straight entrance to your shop. I would also try and design the pages so that the top part of the page stays static (with all the navigation icons on) so that users can easily navigate around the site with ease. Also, perhaps it may be worth considering selling MMA book and kit too, as this will attract more people to your site and many MMA fanatics also need to learn to box! So you may very well get more boxing tutorials sold too! Anyway. Good Luck. Cheers Jus
