I'm having surgery to make me a more effective boxer. For those of you who know me and have seen me in the gym, then you know I bleed easy. I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but it doesn''t seem to matter how hard a tap I received to my nose - every time it happens it bleeds.
Well, it was getting seriously annoying and before I get in the ring for a real fight, I had to see if I could do something about it. Last thing I wanted was to go four rounds with someone in my ring debut and have the fight called because I was bleeding all over the place.
Now, the blood doesn't bother me and until recently I didn't care if my nose bled or not. It was when my trainer told me that the ref would call the fight if I started to bleed like that that sent me in search of a cure.
So, I went to our UMS and told the doc about my boxing aspirations. She told me to stop getting hit in the nose. Good advice, just not very practical. At any rate, I managed to get her to send me to a nose specialist. I went to that appointment a couple of days ago.
The nose guy took about 30 seconds to examine my nose before he suggested I have surgery. Apparently I have a curve in my airway. Where it curves to the right, it stretches the tissue in the nose and any small tap will tear it causing the bleed. In addition, my airway is restricted. Now, I didn't think breathing through my nose could be any better than it is, but he assures me this surgery will not only see me bleed less, but it will increase my oxygen intake.
That's awesome news. Problem is, that it takes a good 6 weeks to recover from the surgery. It is a septiplasty. I cannot do any hard PT for the first week and then I cannot spar or get hit in the face for 6 weeks after that because the tissues will not be completely healed. I am allowed to continue training though, so I guess I'll focus on the conditioning/technical aspect of the game for awhile.
On another bright note, I went two rounds with my trainer the other day and ended up not bleeding at all. I did get a bit of a black eye, but nothing serious. At any rate, I'm finding that his punches are not coming in as fast as they used to. I am seeing a lot more of what he is doing and actually have time to react. I can even think a bit and respond with the right punches.
For instance, one I can remember, I slipped a jab to the inside and delivered a good left hook to the body. It was right there, open and good to go. Of course, doing that puts me in the position to receive a right to the noggin, but I was quick enough and caught him off guard.
All in all, it felt great. I've put a chinup bar in my house right outside my bathroom. Now everytime I go to the can, I come out and pump off 10 chinups. Feels great. I'll be upping the numbers soon as 10 is getting easy. Still can't do the one arm pullup - maybe someday. Oh well, until next time. Cheers.
